Roxie Health is a virtual medical assistant that catches seniors before they fall. We are a turnkey fall reduction solution for managed care plans–medicare advantage (MA) plans and accountable care organizations (ACOs). By incorporating clinically-validated individual elements into our initial product, we significantly reduce product efficacy risk. Research has shown that 20% of falls can be prevented through timely physical therapy and exercise-based approaches.

Our solution includes the following elements: 1) baseline risk screening, 2) tiered triage, 3) continuous engagement, 4) a real-time analytics dashboard for care managers, and 5) facilitating targeted, timely referrals to appropriate interventions (initially physical therapy). More detail about each element is provided below.

More detail about each element is provided below.

Baseline risk screening. Patients are enrolled in Roxie Health at their physicians office. At home, Roxie initiates an SMS-based text conversation with patients, asking a few simple yes or no questions, such as “have you had any falls in the last 12 months”. Next, patients are texted a link to a short, clinically-validated survey with high predictive value for identifying fall risk. The survey interface is designed to be easy for seniors to complete.
Tiered triage. Based on analysis of initial patient data, Roxie can adjust patient engagement strategy. As needed, more in-depth clinically-validated assessments–including recorded video maneuvers (e.g. 5x sit-to-stand)–are requested from patients. Caregivers can help provide data as needed.
Continuous engagement. At regular intervals, based on patient risk profile, Roxie continues to reach out to patients, ask questions, collect data, and share progress.
Analytics dashboard. Care managers at managed care plans use the Roxie dashboard to identify and follow up with patients with rising fall risk and patients who are poor engagers with Roxie.
Targeted, timely referrals. For our MVP, when patients have rising fall risk, we help care managers generate reports recommending physical therapy referrals. This streamlines securing referrals from physicians. As our feature set expands, we will include support for other targeted, timely referrals such as medication review/adjustment. All of our recommendations are supported by clinical evidence (i.e. have been proven to reduce falls).

The Roxie Health team is solving a big issue in the senior population that continues to be unsolved at scale. They've iterated their product with direct user feedback and worked hand-in-hand with their customers to create value and deliver an ROI. They'll be a competitive solution with plans and well-positioned with the Techstars accelerator.

I have been impressed with Roxie Health's ability to identify and operationalize a true gap in healthcare which could benefit patients, ACOs, and payers from a clinical quality of care perspective as well as a financial perspective. The value of identifying patients at risk for fall utilizing technology and implementing solutions to catch them is value based care. I would recommend them as a strong candidate for the Techstars accelerator.

I’ve had the opportunity to get to know the Roxie Health team since their initial days doing customer discovery. They’re a multidisciplinary group that has taken a rigorous approach to identifying a significant need through the Texas Medical Center Biodesign Program. They have devised a novel approach to fall prevention, and have already garnered significant interest and traction from prospective customers. I believe they’d be a strong fit for the Techstars accelerator.
