SBskin Smart Building Skin is a technological start-up and a spin-off of the University of Palermo, which has developed high technological and aesthetic quality products for the reduction of building energy consumption. The patented solution consists of multifunctional translucent building components for roofs and façades that optimize buildings energy performance, while enhancing their aesthetics. These components are made of new high-insulating glassblock configurations integrated with 3rd generation dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) technology. With this "total solution" building roofs and façades will be able to produce clean energy and, at the same time, reduce building consumptions, thanks to the high insulation provided. It also can provide different levels of transparency according to the indoor comfort requirements of each building and climate conditions, allowing to exploit the use of natural light or to act as a shading device.

In particular, different product lines have been developed:
- “Energy”, taking advantage of highly efficient assembly system and highly insulating glassblock configuration;
- “Solar”, adding the plus-value of photovoltaics.
- "Light", integrated with LED devices to create a luminescent glass block.
The panels are assembled using profiles in recycled plastic material and then prestressed in order to reach high mechanical resistance.
These innovative glassblocks are assembled through an innovative and totally dry assembly system to allow for simultaneous construction of the building envelope and the PV system. The patented assembly system occurs by means of profiles in recycled plastic where structures and electric connections are also integrated. The panels are prestressed in order to reach high rates of mechanical resistance, enabling outdoor installation even in high-rise buildings. Furthermore, the assembly system reduces times and costs of installation and also enables the construction of uninterrupted glazed surfaces with only 2-mm joints between the glassblocks. Unlike existing photovoltaic solutions for building integration, SBskin’s solar products are fully customizable in color, transparency and design to adapt to the customers’ needs and architectural vision. SBskin will closely cooperate with the architects to propose the large building plan appealingly incorporating SBskin’s products as a building façade.
