Sealution is a start-up that was founded to improve data collection, efficiency, safety, health, and productivity on board of merchant vessels by deploying IoT solutions. For decades, the maritime sector has been lagging in terms of digital innovation. At Sealution we aim to bring the sector into the 21st century.

The key problem was that up until this day there was no way to deploy IoT below deck due to the impenetrable steel walls that block all signals from going through. Sealution’s patent pending core technology solves this problem through the use of existing infrastructure, allowing us to transmit those signals to the bridge. The receivers (room modules) will be easily installable by the on-board electrician without interrupting ship operations.

A wide range of applications / use cases will be built on top of our technology that can be used to create safety and other IoT solutions for our customers. The first one (CSS) is being developed by Sealution itself, in conjunction with Dekimo.

Our first product, the Crew Safety System (CSS), an onboard safety solution for crew members through the use of bracelets, will be able to alert the bridge in case of emergency or accident of a crewmember. As a result, the time from accident to assistance will be reduced significantly from an average of 8 hours to 15 minutes. Moreover, the captain will be able to muster all or specific crew members through the use of the bracelets.

Our second product, the Vessel Management System (VMS), will be the next step. A visual platform for the shipping company’s fleet, displaying all relevant data and activities onboard and allowing them to oversee and manage daily operations.

The pilot system (CSS) will provide an entry point for deploying our Vessel Management System (VMS) in a later stage, this will allow us to gather data and work towards our goal of creating "Smart Ships" that will drastically optimize onboard activities and vessel performance.

Recommendations

As the business coach of Sealution, I can confirm that they are proactive in our community of Start it @KBC, by attending all the mandatory and recommended workshops.
We also provide our startups with a monthly OKR session, to help them focus and have the team aligned on objectives and goals. During this sessions, there is always a representative of Sealution present and they are always open to help others on challenges they already tackled.

As their business coach, I spent 4 hours per month coaching them on the challenges they faced. They never missed a meeting and the 'homework' that they got was received with open arms.

Even besides the mandatory workshops and coaching, they keep asking for advice or coaching as they want to maintain the continuous growth for their startup and on a personal level.

Therefore I can only say that they are an example to others in our community of what we expect a startup should do when granted access to our program.

Great team who is always open to advice but also stubborn enough as every entrepreneur needs to be. They have a very interesting solution which has wider application than the team itself realize.
With some coaching and guidance I feel they might turn into a success story with significant social impact.
