The SideWalk Buttler is a device that reduces, removes & recycles the most common form of litter on our city streets, sidewalks and waterways, the cigarette butt.
It is a clever cigarette butt containment device that is attached to poles and signposts throughout the city sidewalks where people smoke and litter the most. It is weather and vandal resistance, does not interfere with sweeping or snowplowing operations and is completely touch free to service and empty the butts. All cigarette butts are recycled and kept out of the waste stream, effectively close looping the butt’s disposal.

The menu consists of condition of unit plus a gauge of fullness - ¼, ½, ¾ full or filled. This information is valuable to be shared on the website of the sponsor of the Buttler, and gives a daily update as to how effective their marketing/sponsorship dollars are by proving how many eyeballs have actually seen the message. It also gives a count of how many butts have been kept off the streets in the area. This info, once uploaded onto the sponsor’s website will give a real time count and bragging rights to the effectiveness and their commitment to urban cleanliness.
Once collected, the Butts are put into a plastic bag and boxed up. Then a UPS prepaid label is downloaded from Terracycle's website and applied to the boxed butts. There is a 12 lb weight limit on the shipping, which translates into about 18,000 butts per box. It is then shipped and once received at TerraCycle, they separate the butt’s into organics, which is the paper and tobacco, and plastics, which is the brown filter paper and filter itself. The filters are melted down and incorporated into other plastics and then extruded into useful items such as railroad ties and shipping pallets. The organics are composted and spread out onto non- food producing areas such as parks and open fields.
UrbanCareLLC has created, in Portland, a broad awareness of the “Reduce, Remove and Recycle” benefits of the SideWalk Buttler. Over 395,000 cigarette butts have been collected and recycled to date.
