The capability to bring lab-scale materials analysis to a mobile phone is made possible using patented features in a micro-mechanical system (MEMS) device, coupled with a proprietary algorithm for signal processing. These in turn allow the camera to capture a wide wavelength range with fast acquisition speed.

As these cameras are integrated into mobile devices, the acceleration of tele-medicine will be a primary application. Diagnosing whether a skin mole is malignant or noninvasive measurements of oxygen, glucose and other bloodborne agents are two examples. Further development could allow analysis of pathogens in a reagent treated with a user’s saliva.
