I'd like to recommend Gavin Ong. As a collaborating partner in business, I have had the immense pleasure of knowing and cooperating with Gavin this past year. Gavin is a tremendously enthusiastic and diligent worker with a knack for finding innovative strategies for solving problems and with an ambition that knows no bounds. The energy and mindset he brings to the table has been inspiring, and has led us both down a path of tackling the big problems of tomorrow with the utilisation of technology as the underlying vehicle. Gavin is also particularly adept at outsourcing tasks that complement his outstanding abilities in identifying inefficiencies in business process and driving strategy to develop practical and powerful solutions.

I have no doubt that Gavin is a well-suited candidate to consider for Startup Catalyst experience and has much to gain from the experience to further accelerate his ambitious strides into entrepreneurship.

Jason is currently a PhD candidate in UQ's school of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. He is a key member of our multidisciplinary Interaction Design research group, and contributes greatly to the social and technical aspects of the team and to the broader school community. Jason's technical skills are valued not only within our school, but also in the Business school where he is regularly employed as a tutor. Within ITEE, he is a lead tutor for our capstone courses which are run as studio-based team projects with clients drawn from local industry and within the school. Jason's personable approach to collaborating with teams working in emerging technology fields puts him in an ideal place to benefit from participation in Startup Catalyst. His own research on augmented reality to support remote collaboration is also a great fit to benefit from immersion in a program focused on innovation and entrepreneurship.

I met Samara when I tutored her in a unit at QUT. I was really impressed by her commitment to getting things done right and herding a team of sometimes less-enthusiastic people around. She got one of the few 7’s I gave out. She also had the best attendance record.

The next semester we found ourselves in the same unit and worked together on an extensive group assignment, and it was great! Everything was done to an impressively standard and we got really good results. And once again, she did a great job of the slackers (I plead guilty) around.

Samara’s a passionate technologist and just a really smart person. I know she’ll go far and I think this trip will be a great way to get her even keener on starting her own startup.

As another applicant for Startup Catalyst, I can’t think of a better person to check out Silicon Valley with than Samara. Though given how much of a Google fangirl she is, I'll have to avoid her during that office tour - but the rest of the week will be fantastic!

I'd like to recommend Sidney de Vries. I have taught Sidney during his first and second year at James Cook univeristy. He is a gifted programmer with a keen creative spirit for android mobile development.

Brendan is an enterprising young man.
He is not only a man full of ideas for the web, but is also a hands on coder who can implement his ideas. He is good with both front end and back end programming. Brenda is very diligent and spends long hours trying to fix his code. He writes code neatly and is extremely persistent in trying to solving coding issues.

Brendan is also a good designer whose style of design is neat, clean and crisp. He loves funky little motion graphics on his products.

I think the most important thing is that he is always thirsty to learn He spends several hours each day picking up new programming techniques. Brendan has been a part of startups in the past and knows what it takes to start a business and run it. He has experienced the ups and downs in running a business in the past and that makes him a suitable candidate for another startup.
His skills in design and programming alongside his past business experience make him a suitable candidate for this trip.

For a number of years now, Jason Weigel has been the main tutor for the capstone project course in UQ's InfTech and Multimedia Design programs, which I coordinate. He provides guidance to about 150 students per year as they develop and implement project pitches from industry and around the university. As well as the benefit to him, Jason's participation in Startup Catalyst would also have tremendous flow-on effects for the students in this course, who would profit enormously from his experiences in the processes, challenges and opportunities for taking their ideas from concept to commercialisation.

Peter Worthy

I am a student/tutor/project manager at the University of Queensland. I have worked with Jason where Jason has been my tutor, mentor and peer (co-tutor).

The courses that Jason is involved in include web design, a design studio that requires students to build physical computing projects, and a capstone course on building a wide range of applications for a client. I also know that Jason has been involved in a number of application development competitions such as GovHack. He is also completing a PhD focusing on augmented reality.

Jason has a wide range of skills related to application development. These skills cross many development platforms, for many different audiences and across many contexts. From my own experience both as a student and as a co-tutor, Jason is respected by all for both the skills he has and his willingness to help others.

I would highly recommend Jason for this program. I know that many others will also benefit as a result.

I recommend Jason Weigal to attend the 2014 Silicon Valley Startup Catalyst, as his PhD work has a strong future both in the education space as well as pushing the limits of technology. I've worked with Jason a number of times, and he is both very talented in the IT field, as well as diligent and organised. Jason has a strong background in both design and programming, and also has experience within the UQ business school. He is well suited to the startup environment, and his PhD work shows great promise in pushing forward the possibilities of online remote collaboration to become more effective and reach rural communities.
