We have a view of enabling them to be influencers and mentors in their surrounding school environments. A centerpiece of the program is a cadre of carefully selected mentors, who have been trained on the commitment to this organization’s mission, background checked by the local school system, and performs consistently and reliably. Our current mentors provide training in daily life skills, help establish goals, encourage each student’s participation in extracurricular activities as well as in academic excellence, and teach students how to be mentors to their peers.

Our program differs from the usual teacher aide or community oriented big brother or big sister organization. It focuses on increasing academic achievement for students and developing skills and values employers seeks from future leaders. These skills are taught by qualified adults committed to life-long relationships to life-long relationships with K-12 students and college students. Each of our board members participates in the program as well.
Our first few months of activity produced remarkable results. We began our college level program in June with Wiley College Students in Marshall, Texas. We are this month launching a middle school component at Collins-Riverside Middle School in Tuscaloosa. Schools in Alabama, especially Collins Riverside, are poorly funded. Mentoring by committed volunteers provides consistent mentors for students who could easily take a less desirable path than another. It made a difference in my life and I have committed myself to making that difference for others.

Teaching one consistent goal in a structured environment is more effective then multiple smaller goals. Similar to organizations like Big Brother Big Sister, we believe in helping others attain success, reach academic milestones, and have a comrade to be with you along your journey. What distinguishes us from the Big Brother and Big Sister organization, is that our mentors, our board, and our mentees are held to the same standards.

Recommendations

Step 1,2,3 is a viable and important program for adolescent youth who are in need of a support system which involves a caring mentor and their school. Step 1,2,3, has the potential to serve the student long after they have been promoted from middle school, to high school, and into college. Mentorship for Life is a challenging worthy commitment for mentors and mentees alike. Benefits in this type of support relationship are lasting. My recommendation stands that this is a great non-profit organization for which I am vested in as a professional who is serving as a guidance counselor to middle school students. I have seen Step 1,2,3, make a positive difference in the lives of students.

It is with great pleasure that I highly recommend the Step 1, 2, 3 Mentor for Life Program. The program, headed by Neena Speer, is dedicated to the improvement of students. The mentors work with the students to promote positive changes in social behaviors and increase their academic achievement. The director, as well as the mentors involved, are professional, ethical, and dedicated to the success of the individuals they encounter within the program.
As a counselor at a school where Step 1, 2, 3 Mentor for Life is being implemented, I have seen the positive changes this program has on students. It is amazing how students will rise to high expectations when they know someone is genuinely committed to helping them be their best self. Step 1, 2, 3 Mentor for Life is committed, and I highly recommend this program.
