Detecting the faults is the first and most important benchmark, however once the fault is detected action is needed, and then it is a question of speed. Testing in Australia has demonstrated that a power line starts a fire after 85 milliseconds, traditional protection using breakers can never be faster than 100 milliseconds, meaning that traditional protection will not protect from starting catastrophic fires. The GFN neutralizes the fault within 60 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent the fire from starting.

Many countries are suffering from elevated fire risk and action needs to be taken now, before power lines in these areas start catastrophic wildfires like the ones in Australia in 2009 (200 dead, billions of dollars of damages) or California (100 dead, billions of dollars of damages).

Turning off the power, which has been suggested, is simply not an option as fires seasons in many places are all year round.

The GFN allows the power to stay on while at the same time have minimal risk of the power lines starting fires.

Fires started by power lines have already released hundreds of millions of tons of CO2.

The GFN is made up of three components, an Arc Suppression Coil, a RCC-Inverter and a control cabinet with the Neutral Manager computer system.

The GFN (called REFCL, Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter in Australia) is rolled out in the state of Victoria, Australia as a response to the catastrophic bush fires started by power lines in 2009.
