We provide a mobile phone-based platform that allows physicians, nurses and other caregivers engage patients remotely with high-resolution video and remotely captured images. The telmedx platform is unlike VoIP two-way video conferencing systems in that we use a split architecture; voice calls are carried over the voice cellular network while video and images are transmitted via the data network. The telmedx platform is specifically designed to maintain connectivity and delivered the highest quality images in bandwidth constrained networks. We use a software codec that senses network quality and adjusts frame rate to maintain image quality. We have successfully demonstrated the platform down to 2.5G networks.

A small app is downloaded onto a mobile phone or tablet. Because the video and images are delivered natively into a Web browser, no app is required on the viewer end. Images may be saved to a file system such as a patient health record.

Because of the platform's image quality it finds particular application in wound management, dermatology, ophthalmology, OB/GYN, plastic surgery and the like where the ability to see clearly is foundational to care delivery. One of the largest applications to date is in home health wherein visiting nurses use the platform for remote condition assessment and care direction. For example, in wound management a home visiting nurse contacts a WOCN for wound assessment and care direction. The WOCN at the medical center has discipline specialists available for additional assessment and care direction as required.
