Our idea was to create something that would be scientifically accurate and would make a small but significant contribution to women’s health. While thinking of our product, we recalled a snack that was sold during our childhood while growing up in Russia. However, this bar was made from fibrillated cow’s blood. After some research, we found that the idea to use blood to replenish iron levels came from Switzerland in the 19th century. It was used due to its nutritional value as it replenished iron levels and to this day it is advocated as a good alternative to iron tablets. We thought this was slightly outdated. Our idea is to make a product that has as high of a nutritional value and content of iron, but does not harm animals in the process and supports every possible dietary decision. In addition, this would allow us to contribute to the incrementing demand for ethical, vegan and vegetarian products. Since then, we have developed a way in which we can make our product contain an equal amount of iron as the recommended daily intake by using molasses, amaranth grain and plenty other iron-fortified ingredients. In combination with our methods of preparation, we believe that this product can promote the well-being of women and girls by replenishing their iron levels. Women are of priority to us, due to the high risk of iron deficiency posed as a result of frequent blood loss through the menstrual cycle. In our market research, we ran a poll consisting of 30 young women, of which 100% voted in favour of having a product that could aid them in fighting fatigue and brittle hair and nails as well as providing some nutritional value especially during their periods. Although this poll does not consist of a big sample of the population, we believe that one of the reasons for this is due to the ongoing stigma around reproductive health and menstrual cycles. We wish to enrich the female body and promote women’s well-being by bringing our idea to the forefront and generating more awareness around this topic. We are aware of the challenges and risks that accompany this amazing opportunity, but this is a character building experience where we can work on something we are truly passionate about. We believe that everything is possible with a good idea, a well devised strategy, hard graft, team work and a little luck.

The iron bar is an amazing idea and product which I believe will be a great success. It targets an underdeveloped market and is an innovative solution which is, crucially, ethical and original.

The team behind the iron bar are diverse, driven, motivated and smart. They bring all the ingredients to give the venture a high chance of achieving their goals. They deserve, and would appreciate, this opportunity and I hope they are given the chance to develop this fantastic idea.
