Treemera developed a process to produce the biochemical 2,5-Furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA). This chemical will initially be used to produce polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a bioplastic. PEF will replace, and has superior properties to, several petro plastics. Unlike some current plastics, it is fully recyclable and has some biodegradability.
As a platform chemical it has many diverse applications such as plastic bottles and films, shoes, carpeting and nylon.
The technology advanced from lab to pilot scale in 2020. The pilot plant is fully constructed and operational. In 2023, piloting is scheduled for completion and the technology will be ready for demonstration at a large and profitable scale. Treemera’s technology is different from other FDCA processes and is considerably less expensive. In fact, it is less expensive to produce than many petro-based equivalents.
A cost effective FDCA may very well grow to be the highest volume chemical produced in the world.
