Trek Medics International is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of premature death and disability from preventable causes by improving access to reliable emergency care and transport in resource-limited settings. We do this through a comprehensive approach to emergency medical services (EMS) development that leverages available resources to strengthen existing systems, whether formal or informal. We believe the 90% of the resources need to implement and sustain effective services at the community are already available, leading us to develop an approach that focuses on the four essential components of any EMS system: training; transportation; communications; and policy and management. Over the past 10 years and in more than 25 countries, our core staff has been working with EMS systems across the socio-economic spectrum. These experiences have led us to develop Beacon, an innovative, text message-based emergency dispatching system designed...

These experiences have led us to develop Beacon, an innovative, text message-based emergency dispatching system designed specifically for communities where advanced dispatching technologies are inappropriate or unaffordable. Beacon works by relaying requests for assistance via text message from the scene of an accident to trained responders throughout the community, and then coordinates their response to ensure patients can be located rapidly, treated with basic life-saving care, and transported to the nearest appropriate facility. Utilizing Beacon, communities will be able to ensure that 90% of persons requesting emergency assistance will be attended to by trained responders with access to transport in less than 10 minutes in population centers and within 30 minutes in rural and isolated communities. As of August 2016, we have two live programs in the Dominican Republic and Tanzania providing 24-7 coverage to a total population of more nearly 200,000 persons, with more than 300 incidents responded to over since April 2015.

Included here is a brief summary of how are programs are implemented:
1-Identify vehicles that are appropriate for patient transport within the community
2-Train two levels of responders (transport and non-transport) in basic emergency response and first aid
3-Add their personal phone numbers to Beacon distribution lists and teach them to use Beacon
4-Conduct live training exercises including simulations throughout the community of increasing complexity
5-Launch the system in a public ceremony and prepare for word-of-mouth expansion by training neighboring communities

Meanwhile in the middle of no where.. Lack of emergency care is a crisis for many countries resulting in preventable death. Activating a coordinated emergency response system in poor and remote locations has been an extraordinary gift of life to many because of Trek Medics.
I have followed Jason and the passionate caregivers of Trek Medics for the past five years donating money, time and friends to this team. This year I followed them live into remote parts of the Dominican Republic and have seen first hand what an inexpensive SMS-based emergency system means: survival. The Trek Medics approach is not a helicopter drop or band-aid fix but rather a systemic solution empowering local healthcare providers to work with technology and at the top of their license (or local abilities) to help their own. There is a value to every life regardless of location. And with help we can be sure a trek medic is close by. #TrekItOut

I've been a mentor to Trek Medics over the past few years and have seen them fight the good fight and find early success on a wide range and diverse set of issues. They have a very innovative software platform that addresses an important issue in developing countries. On top of that, Jason and the team are incredibly dedicated. There stick-to-itiveness is beyond compare. I'm very happy to give my endorsement for Trek Medics and the work they're doing. They will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Tamer Fund for Social Venture's mission, providing new insights and rich experiences from a neglected social venture with truly global potential.

Trek Medics International is serving a critical need in an innovative, practical and scalable way. Everyone should have access to emergency medical care and transport. Today, this is a luxury for wealthier communities that is taken for granted. Many communities and countries do not have 911 emergency response systems. The Trek Medics team has developed a text-based emergency response system that can be deployed in communities that cannot afford 911 type systems. Trek Medics implements this system in local communities and also provides training to local community members to use the system and to be the local emergency responders. In this way, they equip communities to provide this care for themselves. This is exactly the kind of scalable and sustainable public health solution that will work. The Trek Medics team consists of incredibly dedicated paramedic and public health professionals that know how to successfully do this work. I endorse Trek Medics wholeheartedly.
