Ukemi promotes activity in highly urbanised areas and encourages a healthier society through digital design, product creation, and community arts development. We create experiences and resources in response to and in collaboration with communities to reclaim the city for free and open activity. We tackle health and safety culture to encourage play and demystify fitness and movement to make it more accessible through our products and services.

In the pursuit of multifunctional movement-centric design, Ukemi has extended beyond its initial inquiry of the city. We are opting to create products, equipment, theatre and events that tip their hat to this mantra - aiming to bridge the gap between fitness and play under the umbrella of movement. Ukemi is currently investigating how to transcend the function of traditional play formats into more movement focused and cheaply accessible projects.

Beginning with equipment, spectacles, games and play park design, we aim to use this a platform to achieve much larger goals. Graduating onto more significant activity landscapes and eventually cities. The famous phrase ‘never leave the playground’ is more important than ever to create a healthy society. Our service changes the image of ‘play parks’ and urban spaces to redefine them to be more inclusive.

Using an innovative and bespoke design, we create environments full of opportunities for play rather than prescribe specific movements or actions. Our models become liminal spaces in which different disciplines and activities co-exist - this fuels imagination and encourages discoveries from the users.

Urban sports could be deemed disruptive to architecture as it transgresses its function. Our goals are to safeguard these locations for future design implementation, so that aspect of our culture is not lost. We aim to create an interactive resource that acts as a hotbed for sharing designs and create innovation/discussion. Highlighting these communities and providing legacy by creating a visual library of historic spaces used for movement and play.

Ukemi wants to capture the magic of these locations by creating a web resource called the ‘Greatest Park Never Built’ to create a bank of resources that will allow us to re-inject these designs back into city spaces and make cities better. Through analyses of each, we will learn what makes these locations so unique to integrate into our designs.
