This innovation is about the selective recovery of water and fertilizers (NPK) from the source-separated human urine from the hostel urinals having the capacity of 800 students. This project is divided into two sections; First: Recovery of water using Forward Osmosis (FO) technology and Second: concentrating of nutrients (NPK) as a recovery of fertilizers using the Struvite precipitation and Absorption technique. For the forward osmosis process, we have designed a novel Vertical Upward Flow Forward Osmosis reactor (VUF-FO), which ensures the higher rejection of the urine constituents and separates the high-quality water (This novel designed reactor and its process have been applied for the patent). We have also developed and patented our own FO membrane which is comparable with the commercial FO membrane. This patented membrane will be utilized in the VUF- FO reactor for water recovery and nutrient rejection.

From concentrated urine (after recovery of water from urine), magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) and ammonium sulfate fertilizers will be produced using struvite precipitation and ammonia absorption techniques. Produced fertilizers have the potential to cut/reduce the demand for chemical fertilizers and accordingly will reduce the import of chemical fertilizers from other countries. Also, the recovered water can be used for non-potable use and can cut the freshwater demand.
A major hurdle for forward osmosis process is the use of the commercial FO membrane which is costly enough. But our research group has developed and patented our own FO membrane which is comparable to the commercial FO membrane in terms of quality. Therefore, we will use our patented membrane for our proposed experimentations.
