Low vision people (246 million, WHO) everyday continuously face with different problems connected with mobility, orientation, object detection, accessing printed text etc. Since vision is a sense through which humans receive the most information, users firstly prefer to exploit remaining part of vision before relying on audio or tactile feedback. Considering the fact that these persons mostly have part of their vision, we are developing an app for smart glasses that will utilize augmented reality concept for vision enhancement – ARvision (Vision enhancement by augmented reality). See-through HMD devices (Google Glass, Epson Moverio) make possible to superimpose enhanced image taken by camera on the real world view of the low vision user. If we process captured image in order to enhance contrast and edge visibility, and then superimpose processed image in natural view of the user, combination of real view and displayed image will result with enhanced visual perception. Our app would offer image processing options that are most often used for vision enhancement: edge enhancement, contrast enhancement, color settings and magnification. Level of each enhancement function will be adjustable in order to adapt to individual user's needs that depend on the type and level of visual impairment. This solution gives low vision persons chance to boost and maximally utilize remaining part of their vision. Our app would turn AR glasses into hands-free assistive device for low vision people.
