At my last private equity firm, my company suffered a mass exodus of personnel due to a key-man departure. I became head of our Asia office in Hong Kong where I was tasked to rebuild the team and prepare for the firm's next global fundraise that would include limited partners in Asia for the first time. With limited resources, but strong relationships, over the course of 15mths, my 6-person team created a pan-Asia business strategy and expanded the team to 15 professionals with satellite offices in Beijing, Singapore, and Mumbai. We invested US$1.1bn over the next 18mths and sourced over US$3bn in capital commitments for the firms's 9th global fund that reached US$9bn. I learned patience, the challenges of building a team, alignment of interests, deeper respect for cultural business behavior, and rekindled the firm's commercial spirit. Three years after assuming my role, I helped sell our firm to the Softbank Vision Fund where I led price negotiations for our Asia portfolio.
