1) Reflecting and Motivating -
Through social networking and partner organizations, WeKnew.org invites people to create a message to their children responding to the child’s question in 35 years, “You knew about climate change, what did you do about it?” The WeKnew.org on-line platform will be a place to share and archive messages to be sent back later. Writing the message will overcome some barriers to climate change action by making the child's future feel present and personally relevant to actions today. This will motivate some people to want to take action.
2) Taking Action -
The online platform will solicit crowd-sourced climate action items that are then crowd-ranked. Three climate actions from the most highly ranked items will be matched to each individual’s interests, values and level of engagement via an algorithm using machine-learning techniques. Three climate actions from the most highly ranked items will be matched to each individual’s interests, values and level of engagement via an algorithm using machine-learning techniques. Nudges shown to increase completion of actions will be used, such as scheduling a specific time and making a plan to take the action, email follow-up and reporting. Research tells us that people will re-define their identities to match actions that have been taken. As commitment grows, individuals move up the Ladder of Engagement with actions that have greater effects. We will constantly use A/B testing to refine our tools and messages. We will collect data on action completion to better understand human behavior and to refine our engagement tool.
3) Amplifying -
Engagement in this tool will grow across existing personal and organizational networks through individual’s social networks, by generating highly sharable content (personal messages & action commitments) and developing an API that can be embedded in partner websites. The focus will begin in the US, and can be scaled out to other countries.
